IBM released eight-core Power7 processor

IBM this week unveiled its latest Power7 processors. This processor, adding more cores and improved multi-threading capabilities in order to facilitate the running time of the server require higher improve its performance.

IBM said that, Power7 processor has eight cores, each core can run 4 threads can run 32 threads simultaneously. Power7 the number of processor cores is Power6 four times the number of threads running on Power6 cores more than eight times.

IBMPower systems division general manager Ross Mauri Monday at a news conference in New York, said, Power7 running speed of 3.0GHz to 4.14Ghz. Power7 chips will be configured 4, 6 or 8 cores.

Power7 chips will use 45-nanometer process. IBM has done the memory level of improvement, should be able to make faster Power7 processor to perform tasks.

Mauri said, Power7 system than the old Power6 system performance doubled, but the energy efficiency fourfold. The system will run the AIX operating system, as well as Red Hat and Suse provides Linux.

Power7 chip also uses TurboCore technology that allows users to provide wholesome activities for the speed of the kernel in order to improve performance. This technology can enable eight cores of memory and bandwidth user support four core activities in order to enhance the performance of each core.

IBM also introduced the four Power7 processor-based servers. IBM Power 780 and Power 770 high-end server uses a modular design, a maximum configuration of 64 Power7 cores. IBM Power 755 will support up to 32 Power7 cores. IBM also introduced the Power 750 Express server. Power 750 Express and 755 servers will begin shipping February 19, while the Power 770 and 780 will be shipped March 16.

IBM introduced Power7 processors will provoke a new high-end microprocessor market competition. IBM in this market and the provision of Intel Itanium processors, and the provision of Sparc processors, Sun Microsystems Inc. to compete.
